Last year the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a new set of maps for our area that caused confusion and led to banks demanding unit owner flood insurance as a condition for their mortgage. The flood line boundaries did not change. According to U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky and her chief of staff Leslie Combs, the new maps included 3-D satellite photos which made it appear that the buildings were east of the flood line.
Click here to see the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map for the area between Devon and Bryn Mawr. Since it is obvious that the flood plain (white dotted area) follows the shoreline, how can insurance companies attempt to justify charging unit owners for flood insurance? If you zoom into the map along the shoreline (click here), you will see that the satellite imagery makes it "look like" parts of some buildings are within the white dotted area.
State Senator Heather Steans and her chief of staff Jen Walling have been deeply involved in working with the banks to see that all insurance demands are canceled and insurance premiums refunded. Both legislative offices have worked closely with ASCO in solving these problems. This is not the first time that Rep. Schakowsky has had to intervene in a flood plain map clarification. |
