ASCO is the Association of Sheridan Condo/Co-op Owners in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.

ASCO was founded by a group of our associations in the 1970s to fight the designation of condominiums as investment properties for the purpose of levying property taxes. We won that battle and a few more. Our next battle was the prevention of the construction of a nursing home on the SW corner of Thorndale and Sheridan. That idea was defeated - not once but several times. The corner is now the site of a beautiful park dedicated by former Alderman Mary Ann Smith to Rabbi Herman and Lotte Schaalman. Berger Park was created by efforts led by the late Kathy Osterman and supported by then Alderman David Orr. Since then, his successor, Joe Moore, has helped build a new playground. But always, Sheridan Road residents like Lillian LaPalio, who headed the Berger Park Advisory Council, were inspiring, leading and working.

As a result of our efforts and with the strong efforts of Alderman Bernard Stone, the condominium garbage rebate was instituted for buildings using private scavenger services. Illinois Senator Art Berman (retired) and the late Congressman Sidney Yates brought in over $6 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Emergency Measures plan that put a series of islands and revetments along our shoreline.

ASCO now represents 33 condominium and co-op buildings on Sheridan Road between Foster and West Sheridan (6400 N). Some are new; others are vintage. We represent 6,385 housing units and an estimated 15,000 residents on Sheridan Road.

Some of our most important efforts have been in the Illinois State Legislature, where we have been instrumental in developing the Illinois Condominium Property Act. Our current legislators, Senator Heather Steans and Representative Harry Osterman, previous legislators such as Senators William Marovitz (retired), Carol Ronen (retired) and Arthur Berman (retired), Judge Lee Preston and Ellis Levin have always worked with us. We have worked with the Aldermen of the 48th and 49th Wards, the Chicago Park District, the Cook County Commissioners, the Chicago Fire Department, the Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Transit Authority and the U.S. Congress.

ASCO has working relationships with ACTHA (the Association of Condominium, Townhouse and Homeowners Associations), Diversey Harbor Neighbors, Streeterville Organization of Area Residents and the Printer's Row Condominium Residents. At the City level, we work to protect high rise residents from onerous ordinances, including the Life Safety and Fašade ordinances and our unsuccessful attempt to defeat the dumpster tax. We were able to work with various Aldermen to modify all of these..

We are all volunteers. If we have missed any information, let us know.
